Humanities and Art: An Introduction HUMANITIES: What is it? Humanities & Social Sciences is one of the major academic disciplines. A number of my summer conversations have centered around the importance of the arts and the humanities. Communication, writing, problem-solving, cultural awareness and critical thinking are all skills that are important to this program. All Humanities are part of Liberal Arts, but not all Liberal Arts subjects are in the Humanities.
